Velyanova House

Velyanova House (Velyanova Kashta) is the restored eighteenth-century home of Velyan Ognev, a Macedonian master builder and woodcarver who settled in Bansko and decorated his own house as a showroom for his work. The result is one of the finest surviving examples of Bulgarian National Revival decorative art: carved wooden ceilings, painted niches, polychrome walls, and a small inner courtyard.

It is a small museum — half an hour is enough — but the level of craftsmanship in a private domestic setting is the point. Look up at the rosetta ceiling in the main reception room and you understand quickly why Bulgaria's nineteenth-century master builders are still talked about. Admission is a few leva.
