Vihren Peak

Vihren is the second-highest peak in Bulgaria and the headline hike of Pirin National Park. The standard route climbs from the Vihren Hut (1,950 m) up a steep marked path through scree and snowfields to the summit at 2,914 m — about three hours up, two down, all in clear weather.

The summit gives a 360-degree view over the rest of the Pirin range and, on a perfectly clear day, as far as Mount Olympus in Greece. The path is straightforward in good conditions but turns serious in cloud or snow; the alternative Koncheto ridge route is one of Bulgaria's most exposed scrambles and is for experienced walkers only. Start early — afternoon storms are common in summer.

A story
At 2,914 metres, Vihren is the second-highest summit in Bulgaria after Musala. Unlike most Bulgarian peaks it is marble rather than granite, which gives the summit its pale, almost lunar appearance and makes the scree on the descent particularly miserable underfoot.
