Belogradchik Rocks

Sandstone and conglomerate formations rising up to 200 metres, shaped by millions of years of erosion into towers, pillars, and figures that local legend has given names: "The Madonna", "The Monks", "The Bear", "The Schoolgirl". The rock park has marked paths that wind between the formations, taking you through narrow passages and past overhanging faces in shades of red, orange, and ochre.

The routes vary from easy level walks to steeper scrambles with good views. The formations are most dramatic in the late afternoon light, when the shadows deepen the colours. You can spend an hour or a full half-day here depending on how far you walk. Combined with the Belogradchik Fortress built directly into the rocks, this is one of the more unusual landscapes in Bulgaria.

A story
Belogradchik was nominated by Bulgaria as a candidate for the New Seven Wonders of Nature in 2011. The rocks received millions of votes in the online poll — a campaign that briefly made Belogradchik famous well beyond the Balkans. The formations missed the final list, but the campaign put a tiny Bulgarian town on the world map for a few months.
