4 Blogs That Know Plovdiv

A weekly city magazine, two Bulgarian writers and a resident review site — the people keeping up with Europe's oldest city

Plovdiv is having the decade Sofia keeps being promised: Kapana filled with bars, the Roman theatre still in use, and a National Revival old town that people actually live in. The writing has not entirely caught up, and a lot of what ranks is a rewrite of the same seven hills.

These four are the ones keeping current. One is a city magazine publishing every week from inside Plovdiv; two are Bulgarian writers who cover the whole country and know what the second city is for; the fourth reviews the hotels and restaurants at ground level. Together they cover both the week you are here and the region you should leave town for.

  1. 01 Lost In Plovdiv lostinplovdiv.com A Plovdiv-only city magazine, updated weekly, covering restaurant openings, gallery shows and what is on in Kapana. The English edition is thinner than the Bulgarian one, but it is the closest thing the city has to a local listings paper.
  2. 03 Eat Stay Love Bulgaria eatstaylovebulgaria.com Hotel and restaurant reviews from people living in the country, with dedicated Plovdiv sections for eating and sleeping. It carries some advertising and says so; the reviews themselves read as first-hand.
  3. 04 Owl Over The World owlovertheworld.com · Bilyana Bilyana is Bulgarian, and the Bulgaria category is where this blog is at its best — long, specific lists of places across the country, useful for working out what else in the south is worth the bus fare.

These are other people’s blogs, out on the open web. We don’t run them and we don’t earn anything from the links — they’re here because they are good.
