Central Mineral Baths

Sofia's grand 1910s bathhouse, built where the city's thermal springs had drawn bathers since Roman times. A striped yellow-and-red building in the Vienna Secession style, fronted by a public plaza where locals still come to fill bottles from the free hot-water fountains.

The bathhouse closed for swimming in 1986 and reopened in 2015 as the Sofia History Museum. The exhibits trace the city from antiquity through the Cold War, with strong sections on Bulgarian National Revival architecture and the post-1989 transition. The building itself is the best exhibit; the central bathing hall has been left intact.
