The largest Sephardic synagogue in southeastern Europe and one of the largest in continental Europe, consecrated in 1909. The exterior is a confection of Moorish, Venetian, and Viennese Secession motifs; the interior is centred on a vast bronze chandelier weighing more than two tonnes, lit by hundreds of bulbs.
The small Jewish History Museum in the synagogue's gallery covers the story of Bulgaria's Jewish community. The building backs onto the Central Market Hall and the Banya Bashi Mosque — together they form one of the most religiously varied blocks in the Balkans.
