Women's Market (Zhenski Pazar)

Sofia's biggest and oldest produce market — a long open-air street of stalls running for several blocks north of the centre. Tomatoes, peppers, peaches, cucumbers, walnuts, cheese, honey, herbs, and the year's preserves; in winter, mountains of pickled cabbages and barrels of sauerkraut.

The market is rougher than the Central Market Hall, cheaper, and far more local. The surrounding neighbourhood, once Sofia's working-class Roma and Turkish quarter, is now a mix of grocery shops, kebab houses, and immigrant cafes from across the Middle East. Best on a Saturday morning.
