New Europe Bridge

The first road and rail bridge over the lower Danube between Bulgaria and Romania, opened in 2013 after a decade of delays. Before the bridge there was only the small ferry across to Calafat, often suspended in winter and in summer storms; the new crossing made overland travel between Sofia and Bucharest practical for the first time.

For visitors the bridge is interesting mostly as a sight from below. The two-kilometre span, anchored on long approach viaducts on both sides, is best photographed from the riverbank a kilometre downstream — the angle gives you the full sweep of the cables and the Romanian skyline. Cross by car or train if you are heading north; the Romanian border control is on the bridge itself.
