Vidin is in the far northwest corner of Bulgaria, on the Danube. Direct trains run from Sofia, taking around five hours — the line is slow and not very scenic, but cheap. Buses cover the same route faster, around four hours by direct coach.
From Romania, the New Europe Bridge connects Vidin to Calafat in seconds rather than the hour of the old ferry. Bucharest is about 250 km north; a direct train link does not currently run, so coming from Romania you will usually go by bus or car.
By car from Sofia, allow about three hours via the E79 highway. The road passes Belogradchik about 50 kilometres from Vidin — combine the two if you have the time.
