The largest cathedral in northwestern Bulgaria, completed in 1926 after more than 30 years of construction. The neo-Byzantine design, with five domes and a tall central tower, makes the building a landmark visible from across the river. The interior is decorated with frescoes in the post-Liberation Bulgarian style — earthier and more folk-flavoured than the official Russian Orthodox patterns of the same period.
The cathedral sits a few minutes inland from the riverside, on the edge of the small old quarter. It is open for services and usually accessible at other times — drop in briefly to see the wall paintings and the carved iconostasis. The square outside is the natural pivot point for any walking tour of central Vidin.
