Jethou

A small private island a kilometre south of Herm, visible from the southern cliff path. The single dwelling is the only building on the island; the rest is wooded slopes and rocky shore. Cormorants and shags nest on the cliffs.

Not accessible to the public. You can hire a boat from St Peter Port to circle Jethou by sea, and the Crevichon islet off its northern tip is a popular destination for sea-kayakers. The view of Jethou from Herm's south coast — a tidy green pyramid in the channel — is the closest most visitors will get.

A story
Jethou has been privately leased from the British Crown since the 14th century. Past tenants have included **Compton Mackenzie**, the novelist who wrote *Whisky Galore* there in the 1920s, and more recently **Sir Peter Ogden**, the British IT billionaire. The island is closed to the public.
