Cycling the Island

With no cars allowed on the island, cycling is the primary way to get around Sark beyond walking. Bicycles can be hired from the harbour when you arrive, and within minutes you have the whole island open to you. The lanes are single-track, tree-shaded, and almost entirely flat except at the cliff edges.

A full circuit of the island's main tracks takes about two hours without stopping, but there is rarely any reason to hurry. The island is quiet enough that you can stop in the middle of a lane to watch a rabbit or look at the view. Most visitors find the cycling is the best part of the trip.

A story
Sark is one of the very few places in Europe where motor vehicles are essentially banned. The prohibition has been in place since the Seigneur outlawed cars in the early 20th century, citing the island's narrow lanes. The result is that cycling here feels genuinely different from cycling anywhere else — the lanes belong to you.
