La Coupée

La Coupée is the narrow ridge of land connecting Great Sark to Little Sark — a natural causeway about 80 metres long with a sheer 90-metre drop on both sides. Walking across it is one of the most dramatic short walks in the Channel Islands, with the sea visible on both sides and the whole of Little Sark spread out ahead.

The views from the ridge extend in all directions on a clear day — France to the east, Guernsey to the northwest, and the Atlantic to the west. Little Sark beyond is reached by a steep path that leads down to abandoned silver mine workings and more coastal scenery.

A story
German prisoners of war were used to build the concrete railings on La Coupée during the wartime occupation of the Channel Islands. Before they were installed in 1945, islanders had to crawl across on hands and knees when the wind was strong. Children going to school in Great Sark had to make the crossing daily in all weathers.
