La Seigneurie Gardens

La Seigneurie is the traditional manor house of the Seigneur (lord) of Sark, and its gardens are open to visitors. The gardens are walled and formal, with roses, a maze, and an interesting collection of plants from the island's history. The house itself — a granite manor dating from the 16th century — is not open to the public, but it can be seen from the gardens.

The cannon outside the garden gate was given to Sark by Queen Elizabeth I in 1565. The grounds are modest in size but well-kept, and the walk from the village through Sark's shaded lanes is pleasant in itself. There is a small shop selling produce from the gardens.

The Seigneurie is the residence of the Seigneur of Sark — the island's feudal lord. Until 2008 the Seigneur had unusual powers: only they could keep an unspayed bitch or a pigeon loft on the island. The feudal system was the last of its kind in the western world and attracted considerable attention when it was finally reformed.
