A 4.2-kilometre road tunnel under the Biokovo massif, opened in 2013, that connects Brela with the inland Dalmatian villages of Zagvozd and the route to Imotski. Before the tunnel, the only road over the mountain was a steep, slow climb that closed in heavy weather; the tunnel cut the journey from an hour to about five minutes.
For visitors the tunnel matters because it puts the interior within easy reach. Imotski, with its dramatic Blue Lake and Red Lake sinkholes, becomes a comfortable half-day trip from the coast. The villages on the inland side of Biokovo are a different Dalmatia — drier, poorer, traditional — and worth the drive for the contrast.
