A drowned river canyon on the west coast of Istria — 11 kilometres of dark blue water cutting between forested limestone cliffs that rise 100 metres on either side. The fjord-like inlet is one of Istria's most distinctive natural sights, technically not a fjord (it is a flooded river valley) but with the same dramatic effect.
The waters are protected and used for shellfish farming — Limski oysters and mussels are sold along the road that drops down to the head of the inlet, and the small handful of restaurants there are the place to eat them, ideally with a glass of cold Malvazija. Boat tours run from Rovinj and Vrsar. The clifftop road from Rovinj inland gives the best views of the canyon from above.
