City swimming beach on the Korana, the social hub of Karlovac summers

In summer, half of Karlovac decamps to Foginovo, a stretch of grassy bank and clean swimming on the Korana, ten minutes' walk south of the old town. The river is wide and shallow here, with a rope-rigged ferry to the far bank where the kiosks sell beer, čevapi and ice cream.

It is the unforced social centre of the city from June to September and a much more enjoyable swim than anything you would find in the sea further west.

A story
The beach takes its name from Dr Adolf Fogina, the local doctor who in the 1920s campaigned for the Korana to be turned into a proper public bathing place. The wooden cabins and the rope-rigged ferry across the river to the food kiosks have been part of Karlovac summers for nearly a century.
