Old Town Walls

Krk's medieval walls survive almost intact around the old town, broken only by a handful of arched gates. The Venetian lion is carved above several of the entrances, a reminder that for nearly three and a half centuries — from 1480 to 1797 — the island was Venetian territory.

The best gates to look out for are Pisana (decorated with a Latin inscription), Mala Vrata (the small gate near the seafront), and Velika Vrata, the main entrance from the landward side. A slow loop around the outside of the walls is one of the better ways to take in the layered history of the town: Roman foundations at the base, Frankopan stonework above, Venetian additions at the top.
