Cathedral of St Pelagius

The parish church of Novigrad, dedicated to the early martyr saint Pelagius. The current building is a 1740s reconstruction in baroque form, but it sits on much older foundations — the crypt, accessible from inside the church, dates from the 9th century and is the oldest surviving piece of the town.

The cathedral is in the centre of the old town and is usually open through the day. The campanile across the small square gives views over the harbour and the old quarter if you can climb up; it is sometimes locked. Combined with the adjacent Lapidarium and the surviving stretches of medieval wall, the cathedral fills a comfortable two-hour walking circuit.
