Maritime Museum

The Orebić Maritime Museum is housed in a 19th-century villa near the waterfront, and it covers the town's centuries of seafaring history with genuine care. The collection includes ship models, navigational instruments, sea charts, logs from captains' voyages, and a room of portraits of the sea captains who made Orebić prosperous — stern-faced men in frock coats who look exactly as you'd expect men who spent their lives on ships to look.

The museum is small — an hour is enough — but the quality of the objects is high and the local patriotism behind the collection gives it warmth. Admission is inexpensive and the staff are knowledgeable if you want to ask questions about specific captains or voyages. It is particularly interesting if you plan to sail in the area yourself.

A story
At its 19th-century peak, Orebić was the home port of one of the largest merchant fleets in the Adriatic. The town's sea captains were known across the Mediterranean; several amassed enough wealth to build the grand stone villas that still line the waterfront. When steam replaced sail, the fleet declined rapidly and the captains retired to their gardens. The museum preserves the portraits, log books, and navigational instruments they left behind.
