Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of the Angels

The Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of the Angels sits on a rocky hillside above the town, a half-hour walk up a steep path through pine trees from the waterfront. The monastery church contains ex-votos left by sailors who survived storms — small painted panels depicting ships in distress, some of them remarkably vivid — and a revered 15th-century icon of the Virgin that has been the focus of pilgrimage for centuries.

The views from the terrace in front of the monastery are the best in the area: the channel, the island of Korčula, and on clear days the mountains of the Croatian interior. The monks are hospitable; the small shop sells local honey and liqueurs. The path up from town is shaded for most of its length, which makes it tolerable even in summer heat.

A story
The monastery was founded in 1468 as a place of refuge for sailors, and its location — high above the channel where storms could blow in without warning — made it a landmark for any ship approaching from Korčula. The original request to the Franciscan order came from the captains of Orebić themselves, who promised to maintain the building in exchange for prayers for their safety at sea.
