Soline Channel Swim

The Soline Channel is the reason this village has a name worth knowing. A gap barely wide enough for a small boat connects the saltwater Great Lake to the open sea, and twice a day the tide reverses the flow. At the right moment you can lower yourself into the current and let it carry you through — no effort required, the water doing all the work. Coming back is just as easy once the tide turns. The sensation of being moved by something you can't see or stop is oddly satisfying.

The water here is reliably warm because Veliko jezero behind it acts as a solar collector. Sheltered from wind and heating across its entire shallow surface through the long Adriatic summer, the lake pushes water through the channel that can reach 26–28°C in July and August. Combined with exceptional clarity — visibility of several metres is typical — it makes this one of the best swimming spots on the island. Early morning, before the day-trippers arrive from Polače and Pomena, you may have the channel almost to yourself.

A story
The narrow channel connecting Veliko jezero to the Adriatic creates a tidal current strong enough to carry a swimmer — you can float through without stroking a single arm. Because the lake heats up faster than the open sea, the channel water runs noticeably warmer than the surrounding Adriatic, sometimes by several degrees in midsummer. The channel has served as a passage since Roman times, and traces of old stone workings are still visible along the banks.
