The main parish church of Umag stands at the tip of the old town peninsula, its freestanding campanile (bell tower) visible from the sea. The church is dedicated to Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus, the patron saints of the Aquileia diocese — a reminder that this coast was part of Roman and early Christian Aquileia long before Venice arrived.
The current building dates largely from the 18th century, but there has been a church on this site since at least the medieval period. Inside, look for the polychrome altarpiece and the carved stone elements incorporated from earlier structures. The church treasury holds a small collection of ecclesiastical objects, including reliquaries that once belonged to the Venetian-era community.
The tower is a local landmark; if it is open for climbing, the view over the peninsula and the Adriatic is excellent.
