Getting There

Umag is at the northwestern tip of Istria, making it one of Croatia's most accessible coastal towns from western Europe.

By road from Italy or Slovenia: Trieste is about 60 km north, and you cross into Croatia at the Plovanija border crossing near Umag — one of the least busy crossings on the Istrian border. From Pula in the south it is around 80 km along the Istrian coast road. From Novigrad it is 15 km.

By bus: Autotrans operates regular services connecting Umag to Poreč, Rovinj, Pula, and Rijeka. From Zagreb, buses take around five hours. No direct train service reaches Umag.

By ferry from Venice: A seasonal high-speed catamaran service runs between Venice and several Istrian ports including Umag, typically operating from late spring to early autumn. The crossing takes around two hours and is a spectacular way to arrive — Venice disappears behind you and the Istrian coast comes into view ahead.
