Old Town

Umag's old town occupies a narrow finger of land jutting into the sea — a classic Venetian peninsula layout, compact enough to walk end to end in ten minutes. The layout has barely changed since the medieval period: tight lanes, stone houses with shuttered windows, the odd Venetian-era arcade, and walls that once enclosed the whole settlement.

The main square, Trg Slobode, is anchored by the parish church and its freestanding bell tower. In the evenings the square fills with locals and visitors for the ritual passeggiata. The harbour wraps around both sides of the peninsula, with fishing boats on one side and the ACI marina on the other.

What makes Umag's old town worth a wander is its lack of pretension. It hasn't been over-restored or turned into a boutique strip. There are plenty of stone benches, a few cafes on the square, and views of the Adriatic from the sea walls. Plan for an hour to explore properly; allow longer if you want to sit.
