Staro Čiče

Staro Čiče is a small village south of Velika Gorica where traditional Turopolje wooden architecture survives in a reasonably authentic state. The farmhouses follow a regional pattern: long and low, with broad roofs designed to shed the heavy snowfall common in the Posavina lowlands, and wooden galleries along the front facade used for drying corn and storage.

The village is accessible by road from Velika Gorica in about ten minutes. There is no visitor infrastructure — it is a working village rather than a heritage site. Walking through it is pleasant and unobtrusive; the buildings are on private plots but visible from the lanes.

A story
Staro Čiče is one of the few villages in the Turopolje region where the traditional wooden farmhouse architecture has survived largely intact. These buildings — low single-storey structures with wide overhanging roofs, built from local oak without nails — represent a building tradition that was once common across the flat lowlands south of Zagreb but has been replaced by concrete construction almost everywhere else. The village is effectively an open-air museum of vernacular architecture, except that people still live there.
