Klaićeva Street (Narrowest Street)

Klaićeva Street is Vrbnik's most photographed feature — a passage between two stone buildings so narrow that you cannot walk through it face-forward without turning sideways. It is genuinely very narrow, though whether it is technically the narrowest in the world is a matter of ongoing municipal dispute with several other Croatian towns.

The street is easy to find — ask anyone in the old town — and takes about three seconds to walk through. The experience is more amusing than spectacular, but it makes for a distinctive photograph and the alley itself is a good illustration of how tightly medieval builders packed their houses onto the available rock.

A story
Locals claim Klaićeva is the narrowest street in the world at 43 centimetres — barely enough to shuffle through sideways. The claim has been contested by similar streets in other Croatian towns, and nobody has managed to settle it definitively. What is certain is that it has been a pedestrian route since at least the medieval period, and has never been widened because there is simply no room.
