Vrbnik

Clifftop Krk Island town known for Žlahtina wine, stone lanes, and Glagolitic heritage

Vrbnik is a hilltop town perched on a cliff above the eastern coast of Krk Island, overlooking the narrow Vinodol Channel. The setting is dramatic — stone houses cluster along a ridge that drops steeply to the sea on one side.

The town is known for Žlahtina, a dry white wine grown only in the surrounding vineyards, and for having what locals claim is the narrowest street in the world (you have to shuffle sideways through it). Vrbnik is also historically significant as one of the last places where the Glagolitic script was in regular use — the oldest Croatian alphabet, which you will see carved into stones around town.

Guide

Eating Out

Vrbnik has a small handful of restaurants, mostly serving Dalmatian-style seafood with local Žlahtina wine. The best approach is to walk the old town, look at menus, and choose based on what looks freshest that day. Lamb and seafood are the reliable choices; the local lamb from Krk Island has a distinctive flavour from grazing on aromatic herbs.

Eating on a terrace with a view of the channel is the experience worth seeking. It may not be the cheapest lunch you have eaten in Croatia, but the setting earns its premium.
