Vruja Springs

A karst river that emerges from the rock and reaches the sea after only a few hundred metres

At the southern end of Živogošće a small but powerful river — the Vruja — bursts from the foot of the Biokovo cliff and runs to the sea only a few hundred metres later. The freshwater is icy cold even in August, and the mixing of the spring water with the warmer salt water in the small cove creates a clearly visible thermocline.

The springs were considered sacred in Roman times — a votive altar to the nymphs is in the Franciscan monastery's lapidary — and the spot is still a pleasant place to sit on the rocks and feel the cold current. The path to the springs is signposted from the coastal road. Bring a towel if you want to swim.
