Živogošće

Small Makarska Riviera settlement where pebbled beaches sit below Biokovo's olive groves and pine woods.

Živogošće is a small coastal settlement on the Makarska Riviera, tucked between the Biokovo mountain range and the Adriatic Sea. Six kilometres of pebbled beach run along the bay, backed by olive groves and pine woods that drop down to the water's edge. The sea here is clean and unpolluted — the mountain backdrop keeps development sparse — and the village has a quieter character than the busier resort towns along the riviera.

The hillside above Živogošće is dominated by Sutvid peak at 1,155 metres, and the mountain trails offer rewarding views across the coast and the offshore islands. For a simple beach holiday with fewer crowds, Živogošće is a sound alternative to Makarska or Brela.

Beaches

Živogošće's main beach is a six-kilometre pebble strip running the length of the bay, backed by a continuous strip of pine and olive that drops to the water. The pebbles are smooth and small; the water shelves quickly and is unusually clear because the mountain backdrop prevents agricultural runoff. Sections in front of the larger hotels have rented sun-loungers; most of the rest of the beach is free.

Mala Duba, at the southern end of the village, is a small naturist beach reachable only by a path through the pines. The cove at the Vruja springs offers a striking contrast of cold freshwater and warm salt water in the same swim.

Getting There

The nearest airport is Split (about an hour and a half by road); Dubrovnik is about three hours south. The Adriatic Highway (D8) runs through the village, and frequent buses connect Živogošće to Makarska (20 minutes north) and on to Split, Dubrovnik, and the inland cities. A car is useful for day trips up onto Biokovo or down the coast.

Things to Do

Živogošće is a beach holiday with a couple of genuinely interesting walks attached. The main draw is the long pebble beach and the unusually clear water; beyond that, the Franciscan monastery in the hills above the bay and the Vruja springs at the south end of the village are worth seeking out, and the Biokovo mountain behind the village gives the most rewarding day-hike on the Makarska Riviera.
