Bartolja Folk Festival

Late-August folk festival in Žminj, one of the oldest in Istria

The Bartolja, held around the feast of Saint Bartholomew on 24 August, has been Žminj's village festival since at least the 19th century. It is one of the oldest continuous folk events in Istria — a long weekend of music with the traditional Istrian roženice (a kind of double-reed bagpipe) and sopele (shawms), tasting of local meats and Teran wine, and dancing on the main square. Worth timing a visit around if you want to see inland Istria at its most itself.
