Plague Column

The baroque Plague Column stands on Palacký Square in the town centre, erected in 1715 to give thanks for the end of a plague epidemic. The column is decorated with groups of saints and topped by the Virgin Mary — a standard form for Central European plague monuments of the period, but well executed and in good condition. It serves as the visual anchor of the main square.

The square around it has several handsome Baroque townhouses and is the social heart of the town — restaurants and cafés open onto it, and the modest pedestrian area makes it a comfortable place to sit. The column is immediately adjacent to the Italian Court entrance, making it easy to see both in the same short circuit of the centre.
