Lidice Gallery

A surprising and often-overlooked component of the memorial site: an art gallery built into the architecture of the museum, containing more than 600 modern works donated by artists from around the world in solidarity with Lidice. The collection ranges from Mexican muralists' studies to Cobra-school abstractions to small drawings by Picasso.

The display rotates a selection at a time. Tickets are usually combined with museum entry. It is a quieter space than the museum or the meadow and gives a different angle on the international response to the massacre.

A story
The collection began with a single painting sent by Mexican artists in 1947 to support the rebuilding effort. By the 1960s it had grown into one of the largest collections of socially engaged modern art in central Europe, with works by Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Henry Moore, Le Corbusier, Karel Appel, and many others.
