Charles Bridge

Gothic 14th-century bridge over the Vltava lined with 30 Baroque statues

The Gothic stone bridge over the Vltava, 516 m long, supported by 16 piers and fortified at each end by medieval towers. Commissioned by Charles IV in 1357; the foundation stone is said to have been laid at 5:31 on 9 July, a palindromic moment the emperor's astrologers chose for luck. The 30 Baroque statues along the parapets are 18th-century originals (or good copies; the real ones are in the Lapidarium). It was the only crossing in Prague until 1841. Expect crowds all day; go before 8 am for the view without the street musicians, sketchers, and hawkers.
