West of town, the Slavonice fortification trail follows part of the Czechoslovak defensive line built in the years before the Second World War. Some bunkers are restored and open at set times, while the trail itself gives a strong sense of the borderland position.
This is the less polished half of Slavonice. After the Renaissance centre, the bunkers pull the story forward into the 20th century, when this quiet landscape became strategic again.
