Slavonice is a small town near the Austrian border with one big gift: its Renaissance centre survived. The two main squares are lined with sgraffito houses, Gothic and Renaissance vaults, narrow frontages, and facades that look far too rich for a town this quiet.
That quiet is part of the story. Slavonice prospered on the old road between Bohemia and Austria, then lost traffic and importance, which helped leave the old core intact. Later it sat in a hard borderland, close to the Iron Curtain, and the surrounding countryside still has traces of bunkers, emptied villages, and slow rural lanes.
The town is small enough to walk in an hour, but worth longer. Climb the town tower, tour the historic underground, look properly at the sgraffito houses, then go out to the WWII fortification trail if you want the borderland half of the place.
