Fanefjord Church

Isolated 13th-century church on a hill above the fjord, ceiling covered in frescoes

Fanefjord Church sits alone on a low hill at the western end of Møn, looking out over the long inlet that gives it its name. Like Elmelunde and Keldby, the vaulted ceiling carries late-medieval frescoes by the Elmelunde Master and assistants — a Tree of Jesse, a parade of saints, and a particularly fine cycle of biblical scenes painted around 1500. The Reformation whitewash that protected them for centuries has now been removed.

The setting alone is worth the drive: the church stands on a rise above pasture and water, with a Bronze Age long barrow, Grønjægers Høj, just down the road. The interior is unheated and there are no visitor facilities, which keeps things quiet.
