Denmark

Small Nordic country of Jutland and hundreds of islands, known for design, cycling, and Copenhagen.

Denmark is small, flat, and extraordinarily livable. It occupies the Jutland peninsula and some 400 inhabited islands, jutting northward between the North Sea and the Baltic. Germany is its only land border. Norway and Sweden lie across the straits to the north and east.

The country punches above its weight in almost everything: design, food, cycling infrastructure, happiness surveys. Danes are famously relaxed and egalitarian, and that ease rubs off on visitors. Cities are safe, clean, and easy to navigate. English is spoken nearly everywhere. The downside is that Denmark is expensive — budget accordingly.

Copenhagen is the obvious starting point. It is one of the most enjoyable capitals in Europe: compact enough to explore by bike, dense with good food, and architecturally striking without being overwhelming. Aarhus, the second city on Jutland, has earned a reputation as a serious cultural destination in its own right, particularly for contemporary art. Odense on the island of Funen is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, and its medieval centre is well preserved.

Beyond the cities, the island of Bornholm in the Baltic — closer to Sweden than to the rest of Denmark — offers a slower pace, striking round churches, a strong smoked-food tradition, and dramatic coastal scenery. The chalk cliffs of Møns Klint on Møn are among the most dramatic landscapes in an otherwise gentle country. Ribe, in southwest Jutland, is Denmark's oldest town and one of its most atmospheric. Skagen at the northern tip of Jutland, where two seas visibly meet, attracts artists and visitors in equal measure.

Cycling is the national sport. Most towns have well-marked cycle routes, and many visitors tour Jutland or the islands almost entirely by bike. The summer light — long, golden evenings that stretch past 10pm — is one of Denmark's best features. Come in June or July if you can.
