Nyord

Tiny island linked by causeway, famous for birdlife and a single 18th-century village

Nyord is a flat, marshy island connected to the north tip of Møn by a low bridge that opened in 1968. Before that, it was reached only by rowing boat. The single village — also called Nyord — is a beautifully preserved cluster of 18th-century farmhouses laid out around a central green, with an unusual octagonal church from 1846 at its centre.

The marshes that make up most of the island are one of the best birdwatching sites in Denmark, particularly during spring and autumn migration: avocets, godwits, geese and harriers all use it. A small information hide near the bridge lets you scan the meadows; bring binoculars. A single café in the village serves cake to the day-trippers.
