Ulvshale Strand

Long white-sand beach with an ancient forest of twisted oaks behind it

Ulvshale is the best beach on Møn: a wide strip of clean white sand running for several kilometres along the island's north coast, with shallow water that warms up quickly in summer. The crowds even at peak season are modest by Mediterranean standards — a handful of families with windbreaks, a few kayakers — and there are no resorts, just a small kiosk and a campsite.

Behind the dunes lies Ulvshale Skov, one of Denmark's oldest oak woodlands, with gnarled, lichen-covered trees that have grown undisturbed for centuries. The wood is a designated nature reserve and a Ramsar wetland, important for breeding birds. Beyond it, a causeway crosses to the tiny island of Nyord, a birdwatcher's favourite where waders and geese stop on migration.
