Axeltorv is Næstved's main square, the historic market centre of the town. It is a pleasant, human-scaled space flanked by old merchant buildings and the town hall, and it still hosts a regular market. Several of the surrounding streets retain their pre-war character, with 18th- and 19th-century facades and the occasional half-timbered house.
The square is the natural starting point for any walk through the old town. From here you can reach both medieval churches on foot in a few minutes. It has the unhurried, slightly down-at-heel charm common to Danish provincial towns — not polished for tourists, but liveable and genuine.
