The Karen Blixen Museum occupies the white 18th-century manor house at Rungstedlund where Blixen was born in 1885, lived for most of her life, and died in 1962. She is best known internationally for Out of Africa, the memoir of her years managing a coffee farm outside Nairobi, and for her collections of Gothic tales written under the pen name Isak Dinesen.
The rooms are preserved much as they were during her working life: the study with her typewriter and African masks, the dining room where she entertained, the bedroom looking out over the Øresund. The collection includes her paintings (she studied art before becoming a writer), letters, manuscripts, and photographs from Kenya. The museum is thoughtfully curated without being reverential — the presentation acknowledges both her literary stature and the more complicated aspects of her life in colonial Africa. Allow 90 minutes. Blixen's grave is in the garden, a short walk from the house entrance.
