The coastal park surrounding Rungstedlund was donated by Karen Blixen to be maintained as a bird sanctuary and public green space. The park runs along the Øresund shore and is a genuinely pleasant place for a walk, with views across the sound towards Sweden on clear days.
The woodland paths through the estate connect to the beach and the coastal promenade. Blixen was deeply attached to this landscape and wrote about it repeatedly; walking through the beech forest after visiting the museum gives her attachment to the place a physical dimension that reading alone does not. The sanctuary is free to enter and open year-round. In spring and summer the birdsong is notable — the estate sits on a migration route, and a variety of species pass through or nest here.
