Gammel Rye (Old Rye)

Gammel Rye — Old Rye — is a village about four kilometres west of Ry town, the original settlement in the area before the railway came and created a new town around the station. It is a pleasant small village worth visiting for the twelfth-century church, which contains medieval frescoes and a churchyard with some old carved gravestones.

The village sits close to the shores of Mossø, one of the larger lakes in Søhøjlandet. There are good walks from Gammel Rye along the lakeshore and through the forest toward Øm Abbey. The combination of old village, medieval church, lakeside walks, and abbey ruins makes the area around Gammel Rye one of the richer half-days out from Ry.

A story
Gammel Rye is older than the current town of Ry — the present town grew up around the railway station when the line arrived in the nineteenth century, while Gammel Rye (Old Rye) had been the village in the area for centuries. The old church in Gammel Rye dates to the twelfth century and contains medieval frescoes.
