Rakvere is a useful base for the north-east — Lahemaa National Park (forest, bogs, manor houses) is 40 km north; the half-Russian border city of Narva is 115 km east; Tartu and its university are about two hours' drive south. Tallinn is close enough to be both a day trip and a reverse day trip (i.e., you can come from Tallinn for the day).
