Devil's Bridge

Dark concrete footbridge on Toomemägi, paired with Tartu's lighter Angel's Bridge

Devil's Bridge, or Kuradisild, is the dark concrete bridge tucked into the paths of Toomemägi, the wooded hill behind the University of Tartu. Built in 1913, it has the heavy, almost severe look of early concrete architecture, and it makes a deliberate contrast with the nearby Angel's Bridge.

It is a small stop, but a good one if you are already walking between the university buildings, the old observatory and the cathedral ruins on the hill. The bridge belongs to Tartu's academic landscape more than to its traffic system: students cross it, walkers pause on it, and the name adds a little folklore to an otherwise rational university town.
