The Kissing Students sculpture — two bronze student figures embracing in the rain — stands at the lower end of Raekoja plats and has become the unofficial symbol of Tartu. The fountain was installed in 1998 to replace an earlier Soviet-era fountain, and the sculpture's romantic sentiment fits Tartu's identity as a university city.
The fountain is most striking in the rain, when a film of water runs over the students' faces — which is, in Estonia, a fairly frequent condition. It is also a standard meeting place for students and a popular spot for photographs. The town hall visible above it is the actual architectural centrepiece of the square.
