St. Paul's Church is one of Tartu's major 20th-century churches, designed by Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen and built in red brick outside the medieval core. Its long, restrained lines are a sharp contrast to the older churches around the university town.
The building also carries a difficult 20th-century history: damaged during World War II, altered under Soviet use, and later restored for worship. Visit for the architecture as much as the religious function, especially if you are tracing Tartu beyond Town Hall Square and Toomemägi.
