Vanemuine Theatre

The Vanemuine is Estonia's oldest theatre and one of its most important cultural institutions. Founded in 1865 — when Estonia was still part of the Russian Empire — the theatre was the first to perform plays in the Estonian language and has been central to Estonian cultural identity ever since. The current building dates from 1967; a smaller adjoining stage hosts chamber and experimental productions.

The Vanemuine produces opera, ballet, drama, and musicals across its two stages, with productions in Estonian. Visiting a performance requires some advance planning — check the schedule and book online. Even if you don't catch a show, the theatre's lobby is worth a look. Located a short walk from Raekoja plats on Vanemuine Street.
