Ontika Limestone Cliff

Estonia's highest limestone cliff, part of the dramatic North Estonian Klint near Toila.

Ontika Limestone Cliff is one of the strongest natural sights on Estonia's north coast, a high wall of pale rock where the land drops abruptly toward the Gulf of Finland. The cliff is often discussed together with nearby Valaste Waterfall, but the larger pleasure is geological: the layered rock reads like a cutaway of the coast.

Use the marked viewpoints and paths rather than trying to improvise along the edge. The cliffs can be slippery, and parts of the slope are unstable after rain or thaw. On a clear day, the combination of forest, sea, and exposed stone gives this stretch of coast a rawness that feels very different from Toila's manicured park.
